The University of Manchester

The conference this year will be held at The University of Manchester, at the University Place Building. The address is 176 Oxford Rd, Manchester, M13 9PL, UK.

Conference spaces and floor plans

The conference will take place at the University Place Building in Oxford Road. Click on the arrows to check out the venue floor plans and find your way around.

Ground floor: three entrances to the building, reception at the welcome desk, catering in The Market area, and the exhibitors’ interactive area in the Drum.

First and Second floor: access to Lecture Theatre B, the main conference space. Exhibitors are on 1st floor as well, together with a cloak room and quiet/prayer room.

Third and Fourth floors: access to Lecture Theatre A, the secondary conference space.

Space Exhibition – outisde marquee: there is a marquee next to the building with a careers fair with 30+ exhibitors and a poster exhibition. It is free-to-enter!

The building is fully accessible, with eight lifts and accessible bathrooms on each floor. Check the map key:

How to get there

It’s easy to travel by train to The University of Manchester due to its proximity to three large rail stations.

The University is close to both Piccadilly main line station (about two and a half hours from London) and Oxford Road train station. For details of timetables, tickets and other rail information, please visit National Rail Enquiries website. Manchester’s main stations are highlighted on the university’s city map.

 

Piccadilly station to Oxford Road campus
The Oxford Road link bus (number 147) runs from Piccadilly Rail Station across the campus stopping at 14 locations and finishing at Grafton Street. This service runs on weekdays between 7.15am and 6.45pm, at ten-minute intervals, and can be caught from the Fairfield Street entrance to Piccadilly Station. A taxi from Piccadilly Station to the Oxford Road area of the campus will cost you about £5. Alternatively, you can also walk around 20 minutes to the campus.  

 

Oxford Road station to Oxford Road campus
To get to the Oxford Road area of the campus, go down the station approach to Oxford Road and turn right. The campus is a 10- to 15-minute walk. Alternatively, buses stop outside the Palace Hotel.

Coach – National Express
National Express coaches serve over 1,200 destinations across the UK from the Chorlton Street Coach Station, which is near Piccadilly railway station and a short 15-minute walk from the University Campus. Find out more about National Express coaches.

 
Bus and tram
There are local bus services running throughout the Greater Manchester area, together with the Metrolink tram service.

Tram: Alight at St Peter’s Square and walk or catch a bus down Oxford Road.
Services to the Sackville Street area of the campus include:

Tram (Metrolink) – various lines to Piccadilly station, which is a short walk away.

Buses from Piccadilly Bus Station: 14, 16, 41, 42, 43, 43a, 44, 45a, 48, 111, 140, 142, 157, 250.
Buses from Oxford Road Station: All buses that run along Oxford Road.
Buses from Cross Street outside Boots the Chemist: 47, 87, 50, 143, 197, 291.
Buses from Manchester Airport: 43.
Bus from Piccadilly Train Station: 147.
Bus from Victoria Station: 42.
Bus from Shudehill Interchange: 18.
Buses along London Road: 107, 192, 196, 201, 203, 204, 205, 206, 373.
Bus along Sackville Street: 140.

Please note: drivers heading into the city on Oxford Road are no longer able to travel past Hathersage Road between 6am and 9pm, seven days a week. Instead you’ll need to reroute, by turning right on to Hathersage Road before continuing your journey along Upper Brook Street.

To accommodate the permanent changes to Oxford Road, Upper Brook Street has been improved to provide drivers with an alternative route. Local access to Oxford Road will be maintained from adjoining roads and signage in place to help everyone navigate the area.

 

Parking
Car parking is available at the University. The multi-storey car parks at both Booth Street West and Charles Street offer paid public parking and are convenient and safe. However, we strongly recommend that you use public transport to reach campus at these times, unless travelling by car is essential. 

 

Electric vehicle charging points
If you intend to drive to the University in an electric vehicle, find out where our charging points are.

If you plan to travel by air, the nearest airport is Manchester Airport, one of the largest and busiest in the country. It is located about 10 miles (16km) south of the city centre, about 30 minutes from the University.

The airport has a number of transport links to the city:

  • Train – The airport’s two terminals are linked directly to the city centre by a fast, frequent 24-hour train link to both Piccadilly and Oxford Road stations.
  • Taxi – A taxi from the airport to the University will cost approximately £20.
  • Bus – Local buses also run to the Oxford Road and Sackville Street areas of the campus.

Limited travel bursaries (up to 50% of travel costs) are available for UKSEDS members and branch groups travelling more than 100 miles to our National Student Space Conference.

This year we are encouraging delegates to be mindful about the sustainability impact of attending the conference. Please bear this in mind when booking your transport.

Accommodation

There are a lot of Hotels and Apartments in Manchester  below is listed a few options in the close vicinity of the conference centre. Alternatively, given City’s good transport links, you may be more likely to find cheaper and better accommodation 10-20 minutes away by bus, or services like AirBnB can offer short-term accommodation.

You will also find excellent accommodation at Hyatt Regency and Hyatt House, part of the 19-storey hotel conveniently located at the heart of the campus. The hotel offers a range of guest rooms and one-bedroom suites and is well connected to local and international transport hubs, including Manchester Piccadilly Train Station (1.6 km) and Manchester Airport (14 km).
