In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic,  many of the traditional ways for students to develop their skills and get involved with the space sector were impossible due to national lockdowns. During this time, the UKSEDS Student Space Symposium was established to provide students with a new opportunity to write, present, and publish papers on space related topics of their interest. Due to its success, it has since become an annual event.

The event was originally hosted virtually due to Covid-19 restrictions, but has maintained this format as it makes the event accessible to students who may not otherwise be able to present their research on a national level.

The Symposium emulates industry conferences, building the essential academic skills of participants. As well as having to produce and present research for the event, there is the opportunity for students to have the chance to be published in the peer-reviewed Journal of the British Interplanetary Society (JBIS). This is thanks to our partnership with the British Interplanetary Society (BIS).

The call for abstracts typically opens in June. For more information, please visit the Student Space Symposium website.

2021 – 10th October: Virtual (700+ views)

In October 2020, we ran the inaugural Student Space Symposium. Fifteen abstracts were selected for oral presentations of the symposium, and shortlisted papers were peer-reviewed and published in a special UKSEDS edition of the Journal of the British Interplanetary Society. The success of the first Symposium established it as an annual event.
