NSSC 2023

Conference Sustainability

We at UKSEDS are committed to promoting environmentally friendly practices and reducing our impact on the planet. In-person conferences and events have a significant impact on the environment, from the energy used to power the event, to the waste generated and the carbon footprint of attendees traveling to the event. As responsible organizers, it is important for us to address these issues and strive to make our event as sustainable as possible.

We believe that by promoting sustainability, we can not only minimize our impact on the environment, but also inspire and educate our attendees on the importance of sustainable practices. We also aim to encourage other event organizers to consider the environmental impact of their events, and to take steps to make them more sustainable.

On this page, you will find information about the measures we are taking to make our event more sustainable, as well as resources and information on how you can reduce your own environmental impact. We hope that by working together, we can make a positive impact on the environment and create a more sustainable future for all.

Our sustainability approach

We are offering vegan and vegetarian options in our food and beverage services, locally sourced food and local providers to minimize our carbon footprint.

We are hiring minimal equipment, the conference badges will be made of recyclable materials and the conference programme will be available as an e-copy.

We are introducing a conference app with a map and a timetable to minimize paper waste and also track our sustainability impact throughout the conference.

There will be water refilling stations throughout the conference venue, and we encourage all delegates to bring reusable water bottles.

We are encouraging carsharing for attendees traveling from the same area to not only reduce the number of cars but also promote networking even before the conference.

We are also providing information on public transportation options, including train and bus schedules, as well as information on nearby parking.

The Good Goal x UKSEDS: sustainability challenge

The Good Goal is a gamified mobile application that allows companies and individuals to reach a cultural transformation aligned to sustainability and SDGs. It promotes the environmental involvement of people, companies and institutions by reducing their footprint through gamification, motivation and the adoption of new sustainable habits.

As part of the UKSEDS sustainability approach to the conference, we are partnering up with The Good Goal to launch a sustainability challenge and track the positive impact of our conference delegates!

The space sector and the SDGs

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. The space sector plays a critical role in supporting the achievement of these goals. At NSSC we aim to raise awareness of these contributions and discuss how the space sector can continue to support sustainable development and mitigate the effects of climate change.

Use of renewable energy in satellite operations and the development of sustainable propulsion systems.

Use of satellite imagery and data to support urban planning and disaster management

Use of satellites to monitor and predict climate change and the development of technologies that can reduce carbon emissions in space operations.

Use of satellite data to monitor and protect marine environments.

At the National Student Space Conference, we aim to raise awareness of these contributions and discuss how the space sector can continue to support sustainable development. By bringing together students, industry professionals and academics, we hope to foster collaboration and inspire new ideas and solutions that can help achieve the SDGs.

We are thrilled to have the opportunity to host this conference and we hope that our attendees will not only gain valuable insights and knowledge but also contribute to the sustainable development of the space sector.
