Course Overview

Welcome to an introduction to KiCAD by George Burns!

This course aims to build upon electronics knowledge taught in an introduction to Arduino which teaches basic electronics and breadboarding skills. This course then takes this knowledge and shows you how to take this forward to a printed circuit board (PCB).

This course is aimed at a beginner level and by completing it, you will be no means be an expert in KiCAD. PCB design can often seem like a daunting step up from breadboarding so instead, this course aims to introduce the basics to you and help you become familiar and grow confidence. It is detailed enough that by the end of it, you will be able to take an existing circuit at a breadboard level and turn it into a functional PCB. This should give a strong foundation and enough knowledge to anyone entering a UKSEDS competition this year that requires basic PCB design. Once you have covered this course, you should feel confident enough to explore more advanced PCB design on your own. At the end of the course, we provide some recommendations for where you could look next.

Future improvements planned:

  1. Preparing a design for manufacture and a walk-through with how to order your first board with a well-known supplier
