The UKSEDS Committee needs your help! This year we’re running more events and projects than ever before, and we need your support to make sure they run smoothly. Getting involved nationally gives you the opportunity to make a difference across the country and build valuable connections and skills for your future career.
We are students, and we appreciate that exams and so on often get in the way of volunteer roles like these, and we will work with you to deal with these issues. If you are interested in applying to one of these positions, please fill out this short form.
We are searching for:
PR > PR Officer [FILLED]
UKSEDS is looking for a new PR Officer to help promote our work to the world.
You will have oversight for news articles, press releases, social media, and podcasts, as well as branding, and the creation and maintenance of web and print publicity materials. A clear and concise writing style is essential, and experience in graphic design and publishing is a bonus.
You will need to able to commit to attending fortnightly committee meetings, and maintaining our news streams, including publishing our email newsletter every month.
You’ll report to the Executive, the top level of the UKSEDS Committee. You will be supported by your assistant officers as well as the rest of the committee.
PR > Vidcast Team
UKSEDS is looking for people to create and run a regular space vidcast, reporting on recent space news, discussing space topics, and interviewing people from throughout the space community.
You’ll need to have experience producing good quality videos and/or presenting on camera. The UKSEDS Committee will assist you wherever possible, and you are welcome to build a team to support you.
You will need to able to commit to a regular schedule to be determined by your team. We appreciate that exams and so on are an issue and will work with you to deal with this.
You will report to the PR Officer who is part of the UKSEDS Committee.
PR > Social Media Manager
UKSEDS is looking for someone keen on social media to manage its accounts and keep them relevant and engaging for students interested in space.
You’ll need to have experience with Facebook and Twitter, and ideally the scheduling app Buffer.
You will need to be able to commit to maintaining a regular schedule of posts using Buffer, and be able to respond to any social media interactions.
This position would be excellent experience for anyone interested in working in social media or advertising in the future. It’s a great chance to promote yourself and make valuable contacts in the space community.
You will report to the PR Officer who is part of the UKSEDS Committee.
PR > Graphics and Publications Designer
UKSEDS is looking for someone to produce graphics and publications.
You will primarily be responsible for producing logos and publicity materials for events, both for print and web. You will not be expected to write content for these materials. You’ll need to have experience with graphics software, and Adobe InDesign.
You will need to be able to commit to producing materials on time and to a high quality. You will always be given at least a week’s notice.
This position would be excellent experience for anyone interested in working in graphic design in the future, and is great opportunity to build a portfolio of work for a variety of media.
You will report to the PR Officer who is part of the UKSEDS Committee.
Outreach > Assistant Outreach Officer
(Yorkshire & the North, Wales, or the South West)
UKSEDS is looking for people to help organise outreach events in collaboration with our Outreach Officer. You will be responsible for arranging volunteers and stalls at science fairs which happen regularly throughout the year.
You’ll need to be organised and able to work confidently with a number of outside organisations to meet tight deadlines. Previous outreach experience is preferable, but not required.
The workload is variable and largely under your control. Together with the Outreach Officer you will decide how many events we can reasonable attend.
You will report to the Outreach Officer who is part of the UKSEDS Committee.
We are looking for one officer to cover Yorkshire & the North, one to cover Wales, and finally one to cover the South West.
Events > Events Officer [FILLED]
UKSEDS is looking for a new Events Officer to lead in organising our events throughout the year, including workshops and the annual National Student Space Conference.
You will need to able to commit to attending fortnightly committee meetings, and ensuring our events run smoothly. NSSC usually takes place in early spring, so you will need to make sure you are available during the preceding months to properly organise the event.
You’ll report to the Executive, the top level of the UKSEDS Committee. You will be supported by your assistant officers as well as the rest of the committee.
Events > Conference Organiser [FILLED]
UKSEDS is looking for someone to lead the organisation of the National Student Space Conference, an annual event with up to 300 attendees and featuring talks from prominent figures in the space community. The conference is held in Spring at a different university each year.
You’ll need to be very organised and able to work confidently with a number of outside organisations to meet tight deadlines. Previous events experience is preferable, but not required.
You will be responsible for ensuring that everything that needs to be done is being done, but you will by no means be expected to do it all yourself. You will be supported by the UKSEDS Committee and the committee of the host branch.
The workload is light between March and August, and then builds towards the conference. The period from January to March is typically very busy.
You will report to the Events Officer who is part of the UKSEDS Committee.
Projects > Astronomy Lead
UKSEDS is looking for someone to lead the organisation of astronomy projects and events, including asteroid search campaigns.
You’ll need to be organised, and able to work confidently with a number of outside organisations, and coordinate other volunteers. No previous experience is required.
Our astronomy activities are typically small scale, and you will be able to decide their scope and frequency.The workload is concentrated at certain times through the year when the activities are taking place. You will be supported by the UKSEDS Committee wherever possible.
You will report to the Projects Officer who is part of the UKSEDS Committee.
