Meeting to Celebrate Sir Patrick Moore

MEETING TO CELEBRATE SIR PATRICK AND THE SOCIETY’S 60 YEARS

London meeting on Saturday 26 January 2013, 2 pm

To launch the series of our Diamond Jubilee events, this meeting will be about Conversations about Sir Patrick Moore and his astronomy.

Well-known astronomers will reminisce with us on their memories and experiences of Sir Patrick.

These include*: The co-presenters of the BBC TV ‘Sky at Night’ (Paul Abel and Chris Lintott), David Hardy and John Zarnecki. The hosts will be Derek Ward-Thompson and Helen Walker, who will lead conversations about Patrick and the Moon, the Space Age, the Night Sky and Outside Broadcasts.

We also wish to hear from YOU – the audience! Do you have any stories? There will be time for you to share them with us.

After the interval, the society’s Annual General Meeting will be followed by 60 Years of the SPA.

We will look back over the past 60 years, decade by decade,highlighting the Society’s development and achievements, and also
looking at major astronomical milestones in each decade.

The meeting will end with Robin Scagell’s review of What’s Up in the Night Sky, including prospects for comet  C/2011 L4 PANSTARRS.

The venue is Brunei Gallery Lecture Theatre, School of Oriental and African Studies, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London EC1H 0XG. This is opposite our usual venue, the Khalili Lecture Theatre.
